What should I do if an accident occurs?
In The Event of Accident
SAFETY FIRST
- Do not panic, calm yourself down.
- Think and act for your own, your family, and everyone’s safety.

Vehicle Accidents
- Get yourself or others around you to a safer place.
- If necessary, call emergency services such as police, ambulance, fire rescue, tow truck
- Take photos or record yourself, your car, another party’s car, property or personal information. For example, car registration number, full name, address, contact details
- Record incident information, such as location, direction, nearest landmark, time of incident, names and contact information of any witnesses
Housing Accidents
- Get yourself or others around you to a safer place.
- If necessary, call emergency services. For example, police, ambulance, fire rescue, plumber, electrician
- Take note of how the accident occurred.
- Take photos of any damage or incidents
- If applicable, obtain information about other parties involved: name, address and contact details
- If possible or professional help is needed, protect your property. For example, cover the affected area to prevent further damage, remove unaffected items (provided it is safe to do so)
- Details of witnesses’ names, addresses and contact details
Loss of assets
- Get yourself or others around you to a safer place.
- If necessary, call emergency services.
Such as police, ambulance, fire rescue, plumbers, electricians
- Note the loss, what happened.
- Take photos of the damage.
- Obtaining information about the responsible party.
- If you can and it is safe to do so, protect your property.
- Details of witnesses’ names, addresses and contact details.
In the event of an insurance claim
You need to have
- Evidence of the incident:
There is a witness who saw the incident happen, or
Photos of the incident scene, or
Video recording of the incident, or
Police report of the accident.
- Proof of Loss
Photos of damaged property, or
Proof of ownership of the lost property, such as previous purchase invoices, credit card purchase statements, receipts, certificates, photos of the property you own;
Proof of financial loss, such as purchase documents, replacement documents, independent valuation
- Show that you take reasonable care for safety and security
- Show that you have done your best to prevent further losses
- Your insurance policy was paid out before the incident
- Have the correct insurance coverage in place and in effect during the period of loss
- Be honest and do not provide fraudulent information (including not exaggerating losses)
