COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES INTERVIEW—— by Yiben Weekly

Use word of mouth to lay a solid foundation step by step, and operate the insurance brokerage business with a low-key and pragmatic attitude.

Preface——

It is still summer in the southern hemisphere, and the high temperature comes from time to time. The wildfires and disasters in Australia also occupy the headlines of the news and the public’s nerves. At this time, the property and medical insurance claims caused by the fires have also been frequently reported in the newspapers. It is said that expensive insurance does not mean good insurance. Between insurance and claims, many consumers are confused and puzzled. Today, we have the honor to interview Colin Jong, who has been engaged in the insurance industry for many years, and his company COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES. At the same time, we also dug up a lot of dry goods, including how to avoid pitfalls in claims. Please read the full text for details.

Yiben: Could you please introduce the background and business philosophy of COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES to Yiben readers? Has the company changed since its opening?
Colin Jong: My name is Colin Jong, my Chinese name is Yang Shunqi, and I am a Chinese from Malaysia. I got a BSc (Electronics & Statistics) from La Trobe University in Victoria in 1997 and worked in the insurance industry in Malaysia that year. I immigrated to South Australia in 2012.
When I first arrived in South Australia, I worked for a local insurance brokerage company. It was not until 2013 that I founded my own company, Collins Insurances Services (CIS). The reason for the establishment was simple. I always wanted to have my own business. It was not easy at the beginning, but fortunately, a noble person gave me a part-time job in food wholesale and transportation. This job allowed me to meet more local Chinese businessmen and understand their insurance problems. So I set out to solve their problems. After gaining their trust, they gradually became loyal customers of CIS.

CIS has always been a low-key business. There is no advertising. It has grown gradually through the introduction of new customers by customers. Now there are 3 family members with rich experience in the insurance industry working together.

Yiben: In recent years, Colin Jong has been the authorized representative of different insurance companies. Will this representative identity conflict with the position of the insurance brokerage company? What convenience and trust will the COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES principle of operation bring to customers?

Colin Jong: It is not easy to find insurance companies to cooperate with in Australia. Since 2013, CIS has gradually been looking for insurance organizations that can provide the best interests for customers. It has changed twice, but it has no impact on customers. Our service quality is still the same. Now CIS is under the Steadfast Insurance Brokers and Community Brokers Network (CBN). It should be emphasized that the service of insurance broker Collins Insurance Services is not just a brokerage company that helps customers buy insurance, but also a brokerage company that answers insurance questions for customers and helps customers get the most reasonable insurance claims.

Yiben: Under what circumstances do customers usually need insurance brokers? Can you briefly summarize in what circumstances policyholders are suitable to choose insurance brokers? What are the benefits?
Colin Jong: Many clients initially do not feel the need for the services of an insurance broker. They also think that the premiums for buying insurance through an insurance broker will be higher. CIS recommends insurance companies and policies to clients based on their needs. When choosing a policy, in addition to considering the premium, you also need to choose a reliable insurance company and a good policy. Buying insurance is also about buying peace of mind, which is what the insured needs. Often the cheapest insurance is not necessarily the most suitable. CIS clients can rest assured and trust CIS’s work. Becoming a CIS client is not only about peace of mind, but also about saving time. Especially when you don’t have extra time for your own business, it is best to leave the insurance business to an experienced insurance broker. In fact, the most important time to need an insurance broker is when an insurance claim occurs. Only then will you truly feel the benefits of buying insurance through a good insurance broker.

Yiben: How many goals has COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES achieved since its establishment? Do you have any small goals of 100 million (laughs) in the future?
Colin Jong:  To be honest, rather than just making empty promises or talking about big goals, we at CIS want to speak with real action. We want to give our customers the best work efficiency and insurance claims services.

Yiben: What is the current service scope of COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES?
Colin Jong: We are currently mainly engaged in business and property insurance. Of course, we can also provide insurance for customers’ cars and houses. In 2020, CIS plans to help Chinese customers in Perth and Darwin. In addition, most Chinese in Australia are from China, Malaysia, and Singapore. There are many differences between life insurance in Australia and these countries. CIS also started life insurance services this year.

Yiben: It is said that it is easy to buy insurance but difficult to settle claims. Claims and after-sales service are issues that many policyholders are concerned about. Ordinary customers have difficulty reading and understanding insurance details. How does COLLINS INSURANCE SERVICES help customers resolve such doubts and avoid some clause traps? Are there any simple and practical suggestions that you can give to our readers?
Colin Jong: There are many clauses in the insurance policy. There are clauses about the coverage, the scope of the insured’s liability, the insured amount, the claim method, the claim procedure, etc. The insurance company does not deliberately set traps in the insurance policy, but calculates the acceptable insurance premium based on the clauses in the insurance policy and the insured’s risk-related information. Collins Insurance Service uses its many years of experience in this industry to find insurance policies with wider coverage, more reasonable clauses, and competitive insurance premium quotations for customers. Simply put, buying insurance cannot be compared solely on the basis of insurance premiums. If the insured does not want to fall into the insurance “trap”, he needs to understand his main responsibility in buying insurance. That is to provide the insurance company with all the risk-related information that should be provided to the insurance company. And the insurance company needs to be notified when there are changes in this information.

For example, there is a clause in property insurance that states that if the property (or house) is not used (or occupied) for a period of time, the insurance will automatically become invalid. If the insured knows that they will be traveling for a period of time (such as a month), they must notify the insurance company. There are also many reasonable situations where insurance cannot be paid. As a customer of Collins Insurance Services, you can consult at any time to see if there are any situations that will affect the insurance, so that Collins Insurance Services can notify the insurance company to ensure that the insurance is still valid.

At the end of the interview, Colin also told us that CIS will support college students who are interested in insurance and may provide some Pearson programs. Interested students, especially those majoring in Financial Planning, may wish to contact them and strive to obtain more internship opportunities with industry practice before graduation.
